Things to do in Tortola

Get to explore Tortola, Cape Air takes you there in minutes.

Tortola is the largest and most populated of the British Virgin Islands.  The island is visited regularly by large yachts and is referred to as the sailing jewel of the Caribbean.  Tortola is the perfect spot to start your vacation and explore the other islands.  It's the base for the BVI's charter boat fleet and the gateway for the territory's sailing destinations.  Tortola is known as a "Sailors Paradise" and sailing is the most popular activity.  The deep blue and crystal clear shallow waters found in Tortola offer some of the best fishing in the Caribbean too.

What to do when traveling to Tortola:

  • Beaches and water activities- Tortola’s northern coast has the best beaches on the island, including Smuggler's Cove, Long Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Brewer's Bay, Josiah's Bay, and Lambert beach.  In addition to beaches, marine activities such as sailing, surfing, scuba diving, kite boarding, and windsurfing are a must when you visit.
  • Sailing- Board a sailing catamaran and glide across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to experience your surroundings without the sound of the engines.  Hop from island to island, snorkel the caves or just enjoy the beauty nature has to offer.
  • Swim with dolphins-Get up close and personal with the dolphins at Dolphin Discovery. You can pet them, take pictures and get to interact with them.
  • Wreck diving-Certified divers can explore the most spectacular wreck of the Caribbean.  Divers can swim through the bow section of the ship and see the ship’s stern with several historical points of interest, as well as observe corals and marine life, including barracudas, octopuses, moray eels, stingrays, lobsters and turtles.
  • Dining- Eating in the British Virgin Islands is an experience; there are diverse atmospheres, from upscale dining at resorts, tropical settings in open air restaurants, to small local establishments on the beach.
  • Lodging- There are various types of accommodations to suit any traveler's needs, from structured campgrounds to five star resorts with all the amenities.  Among the accommodations, you will find small inns, hotels, cottages, and private villas.
